Yes that's the exact path to go. In fact once you know the main modes and your fingers know them it gets much easiert. But just do your exercises regulary till your fingers and your system have the modes in your DNA and also make combinations with the minor and major pentatonic patterns. This also helps a lot. This task is in fact a big cliff to take but once you passed it life on guitar gets much easier.
