    Here you find 3 rounds of smooth jazz guitar licks over the progression Fm7 / Fm7 / Db7 / C7alt which is one of the typical minor blues or minor chord progressions which occur in any minor blues or minor chord progressions. It's basically the figure I / bVI7 / V7 which is very common so it's worth having a closer look at it. Attached you find the backing track in Fm, the audio of the licks with the backing track and the tabs of the licks and the associated modes which are the typical ones in such chord progression.

Learning the modes means that you learn the grid in which a chord moves inside its mode. These are the chord notes : root, 3rd and 5th. I personally love the version of Frank Sinatra. You also find some basic jazz chords which work with this tune + the modes which you can use for the improvisation. The backing track is on 160 bpm but still try to make a really laid-back improvisation. This serves the vibe of this tune most.

So in this case it would be Eb melodic minor. I have selected a tempo of 100 bpm for this exercise so that you have enough time to figure out the sound and usage of the altered mode.

    Here you find the tabs of one chorus smooth jazz improvisation over the chords of sunny. The level is intermediate so that most of you guys have a chance to fulfill the task. This improvisation works around the main positions of the A and G minor pentatonic since this tune works around 2 keys and this way you can play in positions which are already comfortable for you guys. Beside the improvisation I have added the modes and arpeggios in those 2 positions I am talking about. You should also check them out to get a better understanding and orientation during your improvisation. The audio files are the improvisation with the backing track and the backing track itself.
