View File Diatonic Chord Progressions and Patterns - Harmonic Minor Here you find the diatonic chord progressions of harmonic minor in the key of Cm and Gm. These 2 keys represent all patterns which start either on the E or A string. Even harmonic minor is mostly used in way of having the focus on the minor pattern of the key it really also makes sense to learn those patterns related to the diatonic chord progressions. To understand harmonic minor it's really important to understand it's historical importance. The origin of all chord progressions is the classical cadence : In any major key you have the classic cadence leading from tonica ( I ) to subdominant ( IV ) to dominant ( V ). The dominant is either a major or a major 7 chord which creates a strong tension which leads back to the tonica ( I ). In minor keys I IV V are all minor chords which can work as a nice progression but to get a stronger resolution to the I somebody came up with the idea to have a " classic " dominant on the V in a minor progression. Now the minor key does not cover this alteration of the progression and when a V7 ( dominant ) chord is played in a minor progression the scale which normally would be phrygian on the V has to be altered by one note. This leads us to harmonic minor with the typical 1 1/2 tone step. Harmonic Minor is mostly played on the V7 chord but can also be used in other ways or even in a diatonic chord progressions setting. In fact yes - sometimes things can change by the blink of an eye. Yes I know there are a few interesting spots in the USA when it comes to music. I think Houston would be a choice because I have a relative there and the Texas Blues scene seems to be something. But at the moment I don't really know - I will see what will come up. The cool thing is - I can operate this website from any spot in the world.

I want to share this topic which happened to me yesturday : I had a private discussion yesturday to possible move to the USA. Switzerland is not really a country for musicians and artists and all the big stuff in music and the composing industry happens in the USA. But I said in the discussion - I have no job so how am I supposed to do that ? 15 min later I was expecting one of my students for his guitar lesson then he came with the woman who runs the office beside my studio and she used to hear my guitarplaying from time to time. She was totally enthusiastic about my playing and turned out to be huge fan. She said that she does not unterstand why nobody knows me here and that she really knows a lot about music and now it comes her brother lives in LA and he is a composer who scored movies like : Moonfall, The Day After Tomorrow, 10500BC and and.... this guy is really big shot there - on a level of Hans Zimmer. Now she is willing to pass the information that I as a prior composer for TV and movies exists to her brother. What a coincidence which happen just in the timeframe of a few minutes. That's the most astonishing thing which I want to share - however this story turns out ....

I was watching the interview of Matteo Mancuso on the Rick Beato show yesterday and there Matteo was talking a lot about muscle memory which is an important part of virtuosity when it comes to fast playing or automatic movements which are needed to play guitar fluently and professional. I never thought about muscle memory so much till some months ago when I changed my main concert guitar after more then 20 years. I used to play a GODIN LGX since 1997 and played so many shows and video shoots with it and I never thought about muscle memory so much because all was always working fine and my " system " had the perfect feeling for that guitar. Unfortunately I noticed like 2 years ago that this guitar did not fulfill my expectations of sound anymore. Some people say that a guitar which has been played for a long time starts to adapt to the playing style of a player and the guitar starts to alter it's sound to that specific playing technique. I must agree on that. An electric guitar is also kind of a " living " being if you spend a lot of time with it. 2 years ago I noticed that my old GODIN LGX does interact with me in a way which I expected, because my playing style developed to a new level and the many plastic parts on the backside started to bother me. I was looking for the pure sound of a great solid body electric guitar. So I started to search for a new guitar which I found last year. It took me since then to change my muscle memory to this new guitar. Even though this guitar is great I needed to train every single aspect of my playing style and bring it to the level of a live performance which has to be done. That's the reason for this regular live streaming HPCrazy Guitar Nights. On each live streaming concert I prepare a specific part of my playing and then I have to play it on a live performance. I can tell that I had really big struggles because each of those livestreaming performances felt like my first concerts and all experience of 1997 till today which was stored in my muscle and mental memory did not really cover 100 % as I have been used to all those years. When you have the stress of a life performance your muscle memory can give you the security that everything works automatically so that you can focus on the mental parts of a good life performance. Sounds easy but the bad part of it is, that you can only finish the process of building up a 100% secured muscle memory in a life performance. You can prepare yourself for a life performance but the final learning process happens during the life performance. That's what I am going through at the moment. My experience helps me a lot but each of the life performances a finalizing of different parts of the muscle memory. The good part is the new guitar supports this a lot but I sometimes find myself confronted with thoughts that I should switch back to my old guitar. On a private performance on new years day I did - and it was a disaster. My muscle memory did not remember the old guitar anymore. The good news - I feel like the switching process soon is finished and then the new guitar will carry me to a new level but honestly I totally underestimated this process. It was tough and frustrating. If you ever asked yourself why great players often played only one guitar or only one exact series of the same guitar on stage over many years - thats the anwser. When your muscle memory works 100% you can focus totaly on the creativ part of a life performance.
