I have been overworking my entire playing with the new guitar. The general idea to get a new concert guitar was that my old guitar the GODIN LGX did not match my expections of the sound of the guitar itself anymore with new playing technique. I have the new guitar since July and in fact it took me till now to really get used to it and to adapt the great features of this new guitar in my playing. Now with the last concert on Dec 27th and played all tasks also life on a concert so that I can say that I am on a new spot in my guitar journey and it's great to continue from there : and this leads to the 2nd part. I did not check the guitar scene so much in the last 3 years and I did not notice what kind of incredible young and new players are out there and these guys really redefine the art of guitar playing a amazing and modern way. I will name 3 of them which really caught my attention : Ichita Niko - he has a really amazing way of creating sound with a lot of harmonics, tapping additions in chords. Tim Henson - I would say he was influenced by Ichita Niko or opposite. A similar way of playing rhythmics, chords and breaking songs appart in different rhythm patterns. But he is more the metal and metal core guy with his band Polyphia : and last but not least the really outstanding new guitar star on the stage of guitar players. Matteo Mancuso - well you find so many video's of him, or reaction videos. And all pro players give this guy a big " WOW " - me too. This guy is really on a new level of gutiar playing and in fact he is encouraging me to work more on my finger picking stuff. This guy gave me some really serious thoughts which direction I want to go next - and I came to the finding that the individual music and composing makes every artist unique and special - so I continue my path with the Farbmusik Concerts. But you check Matteo Mancuso - this guy really plays the biggest technical difficulties total effortless and perfect.

yes I understand your confusion. In fact you use the so called " options " when you work with 7th chords. In the case of dorian it's like this : Without 7th chords you see the intervals like this : 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7 - 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7 - 1 If you take 7th chords you go over the octave to find out the options so then it's like this : 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7 - 8 9 b10 11 12 13 b14 The reason why you do that is the principle how you create chords in a mode. You use the method of stacking up triads. If you want to find out the options to continue stacking triads after the 7th you continue counting even you go over the octave. Without the 7th chord you just start from the beginning once you get to the octave. 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7 - 8 9 b10 11 12 13 b14 I hope this helped. I don't say it's logical but's the way it is done.

In fact - most guitar players don't count and they don't know rhythm - but it's an important thing to be able to know what you are doing. That's why I created this program, were students learn to know rhythm in order to improve there playing level dramaticly. But I know if you never done that before it's quit hard at the beginning. Just keep on working on it guys - it will come....

Here you find a really cool and fun blues rock guitar riff played with a drop D tuning. On the solo you can use the phrygian Nat. 3 scale. I wrote one version of it down + a quit managable high speed lick which you can play with that pattern. These files are associated to this tutorial here :Free -
It's not needed but it can help a lot because most players really know the shapes of the pentatonics well. ... just take it step by step with the modes. As I already said it's a longer process till the puzzle reveals the full picture.

That's a hard topic of course - and it takes time. The best way is to learn the modes ( including the intervals ) and start to work with them. It's a longer process till you can play freely on the fretboard. The pentatonics can be a already know grid - if you know the intervals of the pentatonics.

A great move - knowing the intervals is the key to play over the entire fretboard in any key, any mode and any situation. It takes a while but once the roadmap is set you can start to move freely on the fretboard. I am playing 10's since a long time. Those ones don't break and keep the sound for a while once you put them up. 09's or even08's can also sound great but they loose the sound faster and have to be replaced faster.... at least that is my personal experience back there .... many years ago where I decided to switch to 10's.

Hey Jim, yeah they can make us do crazy things. Back in that time - I was so focused on that one girl, that I didn't notice that I had the attention of all other girls That's quite a wild story with your hand. I am happy for you that it could recover and you still can play guitar. Ok now on to your practice plan : Yes your guitar teacher was right. One needs to know what your doing - specially when it comes to rhythm. I can not highlight enough that it is useful to understand rhythm and also the way it is written. You already found the rhythm bootcamps so you are right on track. If you don't know the notation of rhythm, maybe learn the theory too : Here are also some basic - intermediate exercises which should be sufficient for your task getting better in lead guitar requires basically the technical ability to work out things above the pentatonics. I strongly recommend that you take your time on the development of your technical abilities. Take it in a speed where you still can monitor what you are doing and make each exercise you are doing at least 2 times per day. When you practice scales / modes also learn the intervals which you are playing at the same time. Knowing which note in the scale you are playing the key to the ability to work properly with them. Here you have a few technical exercises : I would start with the major modes - once you are familiar with it then it's time to move to the minor modes. Minor is basicly the same - but the interpretation is different. You need to understand that difference to understand modes and their practical use. Thats' about that - I would wait with the arpeggios till you fully understand the modes and you can play them like on 70 bpm ( 16th notes ) Really take your time on those things and don't rush. It will take months till you can use modes fluently. Here's a tutorial where you can check if you are able to fullfill a first intermediate task on that topic.

Hey Jim, thanks for the insight of your guitar story. I have a similar story when I started. I did my first concerts when I was still in high school to impress the girl I loved there so much. Well it did not work out, but then I got really obsessed with music and guitar playing. You teacher Pat was right. I would sign that statement anytime and he was also right about the accent. As an example - I started as a small kid on piano and picked up my first guitar at the age of 20. Even after all those years I still think the guitar as a pianist and I feel most " home " on guitar when I play the double handed touch technique which is basicly playing piano on guitar.

Here you find one chorus of an example on how to play an easy blues guitar solo over the full fretboard by using the pos. 1 / 2 and 4 of the minor pentatonic. This is sufficient to fulfill the task. The example opens up with a standard opening and then quickly moves on to the high position to then come back to the very low position with a run. Now lets figure out the jazz : On your current playing level ( as you described ) I would only focus on these things at the moment : any easy jazz blues topic like this one : Jazz Blues and blues are very similar and on the improvisation you can work with the blues scale instead only the pentatonic and then you already sound cool. You can find a few tutorials around this topic here under this tag : easy jazz guitar And I would start to practice the basic jazz guitar chords and shown here in the basic jazz guitar tutorial : Once you can play the basic jazz chords then you might also want to start to play the chords on any jazz guitar standard but I strongly recommend to take your time on this topic. I feel like you are not ready for the requirements described here - but still you can check them out if you want. I hope this helps you and gives you material to practice for a while. If you wish you can share your progress here with me and the community and you guys can also share your stories with each other and help.

Hey Peter, thanks for your information. I first cover up the blues genre since that one is easier to talk about. You did this tutorial here : This one is the foundation to move on with any blues guitar easy blues guitar intermediate but lets be more specific : What you need to have achieved is to understand what a blues form, a blues riff, the difference between the shuffle and the straight rhythm and the question / answer / resolution improvisation concept is. Now you can either learn more blues riffs in your playing level, or more ideas for blues licks. Timing is also an important part. You find a summary of ideas listed here but you can use any tutorial which refers to the topics I told you and is marked with the easy or intermediate tag. If you fulfilled those requirements then you are ready to move on learning more blues licks and more riffs. The foundation of the blues will not change anymore. Only the form, the riffs or your question / answer / resolution ideas and then you can start with the " free soloing " part with blues licks.
