On guitar I have been a legato and touch technique player for many years. Since I first started as a pianist in my career I always wanted to get to the same playing abilities with both hands on guitar by just transferring my piano style to guitar. I remember when I started that journey. It was short after my studies at Swiss music university I wanted to make a solo program based on this technique and there I played the first simple tune but at the end it took me many years to get this playing technique to perfection and like 3-4 years ago I felt I can not develop further as a guitarist if I would only focus on this technique. But I love the smoothness of the sound of legato playing and tapping. It creates such A nice flow in the playing which you can not achieve when you just do the regular picking technique. But on the other hand some things are not possible when you only go for the legato technique. So facing these facts I decided to start my journey to economic picking like 2 years ago starting with the first arpeggio exercises you can view here. It took a while till my fingers and hands could do all stretch movements which are created by these exercises. First I just did these exercises with alternate picking but later I started to do those exercises with economic picking meaning that I would use economic picking on all spots where possible. This was harder than I thought - even when you are able to play the arpeggio's properly with alternate picking technique it took me one additional year to get the movements nice, smooth and fluent with economic picking that it would sound as nice and smooth as by using the legato technique. Now finally I have reached a spot where I can start to use those endless exercises in a creative way in upcoming jazz and smooth jazz interpretations and improvisations. The main task is that this technique shall be used spontaneously in an improvisation and not just by playing a long lick of phrase which you learned by heart. I feel now after 2 years the first results are working now which I soon will present with recordings and I will also share some licks and ideas here for those who want to give it a try. :-)

This is the first of many tutorials to come where you can take your step from an intermediate blues guitar player to a solid intermediate smooth jazz guitar player. Here you can download the files associated to this tutorial :

This course will guide you through the basics you need to know about playing smooth jazz guitar. This includes the theoretical knowledge of modes and how to use them in a smooth jazz environment in combination with regular improvisation techniques and ideas with pentatonics. Even pentatonics work in smooth jazz the modes are also needed to get the vibe of smooth jazz. Rhythm and rhythm studies are also part of this course which are essential to play a proper smooth jazz guitar. In order to follow this course here you need to be an intermediate player who at least fullfilled the requierements of the intermediate blues guitar course since blue and smooth jazz have a very similar improvisation concept with motives and developing motive driven solo and improvisation ideas. It is recommended that you already know the theory about modes but you can also follow this course without this knowledge and learn to work with modes by doing these exercises which are posted here. Hier habe ich angelehnt an den Stil von Hans Zimmer eine cinematische Komposition umgesetzt, welche auch live mit etwas Gitarreneffekten gespielt werden wird. Die Tonart F# Moll ist sehr emotional und ausdrucksstark und passend zur Farbe " Violett ". Den Titel habe ich angelehnt an eine Szene aus Kevin Costners Film " Postman " genommen. ---------------- Everywhere in the world there is so much fighting and war. Here is a piece as a small contribution to peace. Here I have created a cinematic composition based on the style of Hans Zimmer, which will also be played live with some guitar effects. The key of F# minor is very emotional and expressive and matches the color "violet". I based the title on a scene from Kevin Costner's movie "Postman".

This is the first tutorial of the series " Guitar Sound Lab " where I talk about the pure sound of the guitar. I talk about the dynamic range of your equipment and what you can figure out by selecting different guitar pickup settings and settings of your volume. Nach langem Ueberlegen haben ich beschlossen ab sofort wieder wesentlich mehr Zeit in die Weiterentwicklung der Farbmusik zu geben. Der Fokus soll dabei wieder zurück gehen zu dem ursprünglichen Konzept der musikalischen Darstellung von Farb mit Kompositionen und Improvisationskonzepten an der Gitarre und dem Piano. Die letzten 3-4 Jahre waren die Farbmusik Konzerte und Neuproduktion im Wesentlichen auf Piano Solo Stücke in 432 Hz ausgelegt. Das hatte verschiedene Gründe - die ausschlaggebenden Gründe waren aber der grosse Erfolg einer CD mit über 600000 Streams / Monat über eine sehr langen Zeitraum. https://orcd.co/8rjxm2e Der andere Grund, war dass das umfassende Konzept sehr aufwendig ist und es boten sich immer wieder andere Möglichkeiten an die Farbmusik entsprechend kommerziell und kreativ einzusetzen. Im Zuge der Entwicklungen von AI auch in Bereich der Musikkomposition macht es allerdings Sinn andere Wege zu gehen, welche sich von den üblichen Genres und üblichen Einteilungen von Musik unterscheiden. AI ist nicht in der Lage Musik nach Farbe zu klassifizieren, geschweige denn zu produzieren, weil die Umsetzung von Farb in Musik im Wesentlichen eine emotionale Angelegenheit ist. Der andere Aspekt wird sein, dass die Gitarre wieder umfassender in die Farbmusik integriert wird. Der Aufwand für die Produktion und Improvisaiton von Farbe auf der Gitarre ist wohl wesentlich grösser, aber dafür ist auch der Wiedererkennungswert viel grösser, währenddem Pianoimprovisation sehr an Interpreten wie Keith Jarett, Ludovico Einaudi, Schuhmann oder andere leichte klassische Pianisten erinnert. Es werden nun auch wieder moderne Sounds eingesetzt, was eigentlich zu Beginn der Farbmusik um 2007 herum ein grosses Erfolgskonzept war, was auch ein jüngeres Publikum begeistern konnte. Dazu werde ich meine Erfahrung als Komponist für TV, Filme und andere mulitmedia Anwendung einfliessen lassen und mit den oben genannten Konzepten koordinieren. Ich sehe in diesem Konzept eine sehr gute Möglichkeit in einen Feld mit AI dominierte Musikproduktion bestehen zu können. Next Sunday, matching the Sun - Venus conjunction on my Radix Sun (astrologers know what that means) 🙂 I will once again do an online concert to take a first step in a new musical direction. Unlike the color music concert, I'm streaming from the studio and so the picture and sound should be transmitted in studio quality. I honestly don't know exactly what I'll be playing yet - but it will be more colorful, jazzy, melodic and versatile.
