Here you find some basic phrashing tricks for jazz guitar. It is crucial that you do all exercises with your foot on 2 & 4 - that gives you the proper phrashing automaticaly. There are 2 backing tracks with a chordprogession Bb7 / Eb7. One backing track is only with hi-hat and bass and the other one has some rhythm guitar. 5. Improvisation vs playing written music is an ongoing topic when it comes to learn music or learning to play guitar. You can compare it to the way jazz or blues musician see music and the way classical educated musicians express music. So which one is the right or better one ? From my experience as a guitar teacher over many years I can tell that there are both types of players out there and there are many players who take the best out of both worlds but also some of them who just prefer one of those worlds. As an example I am very much on the side of free improvisation and I am always having a really hard time when I have to play something note by note as it is written. These days I needed to learn 150 minutes of repertoire for a cover rock band and I really had a hard time learning everything by heart but it is worth it to explore that type of playing where you don't feel so comfortable because it strengthens your abilities in your preferred world of playing. Both ways need a lot of practice and discipline to reach mastery and to become a balanced and perfect player. I do believe that it makes sense to work on your weak spots from time to time but I know there are also other opinions out there in the guitar world.

  8. Here again a topic for guitar sound nerds : I spent the last days and weeks searching and finding a perfect emotional and dynamic sound for the electric guitar in different genres. What does a dynamic guitar sound mean ? A sound that reacts to the peculiarities of the playing technique or reacts even more than usual. Here are my results : Blues - a slightly distorted sound that reacts creamy and yet dynamically in the lower frequency bands and sings slightly in the high registers but still belongs to the clean sound spectrum. Rock - high gain settings with lots of overtones, which makes it easier to play legato, so that it almost goes by itself and yet the sound does not sound compressed and can still react dynamically. Economic picking works effortless but the tone is still dynamic and has a bluesy touch. Jazz - a bulbous clean sound with an emphasis on the traditional low frequencies, but which still responds to harder strikes with the pick, making it much easier to play faster runs without the sound being too high-pitched. As a special feature, I created the sound in such a way that when you go into the higher registers and strum harder, the sound releases more treble and brilliance to the strumming strength to achieve a bluesy emotional character in the sound. This was all possible with dynamic interactive processes in the sound programming and took me weeks of research and tinkering. Of course, the choice of guitar is also crucial. The more dynamic and balanced a guitar and pickups react, the more such sound nuances are reflected in the guitar sound itself.
