Whenever a student enters my room and wants to learn guitar from the very beginning I always say the same thing : " First everybody needs to learn the basic chords on guitar . If you practice regularly on a daily basis you can make the basic chords in a fluent way in 3 - 6 months in order that you are able to play any simple song as you can see in this example. The really big mountain to climb is the barré chord. That one might take 6 months or more till you can play that one fluently in a simple song. To get the barré chord done you first start with the barré replacement chord. You have to figure out how you need to place your finger in a way that all strings are sounding. Normally a beginner is able to get 4 strings sounding at the beginning. This will improve with practice. Once you can do the barré replacement chord then you can move on to the barré chord.

Playing the simple songs pay attention to the proper down - and upstrokes and also notice that the last upstroke of a bar is an empty chord. This helps you to make the chord change fluently.

To fulfill the described tasks in the estimated timeframe you need to practice this daily and do each exercise 3 times. Once you pass this threshold then your fun on guitar can start.
