Symphonic Rock ( John Petrucci Style )- Guitar Masterclass
In this guitar masterclass I'll talk about symphonic rock and relate it to the playing style of John Petrucci Petrucci from Dream Theater. This is not a beginner's lesson so you need to have your things a little bit together to follow my instructions here but for sure it makes sense to get some inspiration even though you probably are not able to play the really fast guitar licks which I'm going to show you here.
The guitar master class starts with the courts of the simple backing track with the chords Em, C and D and then gives you the instructions which modes are used on those guitar chords. These are aeolian, lydian and mixolydian. I saw your parents with the so-called three note per string scales. Then I will show you how to use those scales either with 16th note runs or sextole runs. After that I show you how to make combinations of the fast guitar runs and a simple melodic symphonic rock guitar theme. The theme is played in two octaves and this way you can create more tension in your melody development. a signature element of John Petrucci are his octave licks. They're going to show you how they are done and how you can develop it and come make a combination with the melody and the fast runs. Coming to the highlights you also might want to add some tremolo picking licks and they are going to show you different kinds of licks and possibilities which work for different playing levels. At the end I mix everything together to a great symphonic rock guitar instrumental.
