Here you can learn the concept of play and rest which Miles Davis created in his early recordings in jazz. This concept works for any instruments so also for jazz guitar. Miles Davis was a master of time and space in his improvisation concepts and here we analyze this concept of play and rest where are you keep improvisation lines going on by playing something then resting and then continuing the improvisation from where you rested. To put it into simple words you just play a phrase for one bar and then rest one bar then you continue to play one bar then you rest one bar. The more complex play rest concept works with playing one bar rest 2 bars or playing 2 bars rest 3 bars.

An other important phrasing concept is to move the played motifs in the timing signatures. As an example you start the motive first on count one and when you repeated the second time you started on count 2 or count 1 + or any other timing signature which comes to your mind.

In this tutorial I show you how to work with play rest 1 and 1 or 1 and 2. Also I move around the motives in the timing signatures as described. These are the easiest ways to start this concept but of course you can continue this and you really need to work on your timing I know you're feeling of space in music. The more you work on it the more you can really work this concept by intuition and then it starts to get more fluent. Also listen to recordings of Miles Davis to get a feeling of his way of phrasing and controlling time and space in jazz music.
