Cool Jazz Guitar Cat ( Timing & Phrasing )
Playing a cool and solid jazz guitar does not necessarily have to do with speed and runs - it's also about timing, space and phrasing. Miles Davis was the master of time and space in his phrasing so let's have a look at a few easy tricks to get into jazz guitar phrasing by understanding the rhythm which is played. In this case I am showing how to play a blues track and you can use the minor F minor pentatonic or the F blues scale. Jazz blues is mostly in the key of F or Bb - in this case F. Pay close attention to my instructions how to work with timing and how to modify rhythm figures. By understanding rhythm figures you can also start to modify them. The 2 4 feel is the center of all exercises. Play all examples with the 2 4 feel that gives you the right groove and makes you swing correctly.

In this tutorial you can learn how to play a smooth jazz guitar.  when it comes to smooth jazz the guitar lines have to be smooth relaxed and have a great phrasing. It's the phrasing which makes the smoothness and the difference between cool and very smooth jazz guitar lines in this genre.  I broke down three main phrasing tricks which you can use to enter this really great genre of smooth jazz even if you're not so experienced in jazz guitar playing.  In the first part of the tutorial I get some technical advice how you can build up your speed with the pentatonic or the minor scales and then I show you three rhythm figures and phrasing tricks which you can use in any situation by using any scale you like. When you analize protagonist of smooth jazz like Lee Ritenour, George Benson or other players it more or less leads to these  three rhythm figures in any combinations.The combination of those three figures I am showing you if any notes you are using makes you a pro in smooth jazz guitar even if you're not experienced in jazz and you get a lot of fun in this kind of playing. But take your time to build up the speed which is needed to play 16 notes in the genres.

Here I recorded a spontaneous take after the videoshoot of the minor blues guitar tutorial. I wanted to get a puristic approach to minor blues and relating to Peter Greens style back from the 60's with a strong spring reverb effect and no additional effects. I have used a Vibra King amp with a 2*12 cabinet with an off-axis microphone setting, a large spring reverb with a mix level of 25% and a dunlop cry baby. I began the recording with finger picking and in the 3rd chorus I switched to normal pic technique. The great thing with puristic recordings is that these details in fact matter. But check it out yourself

Hey HP, want to first say thanks for creating this great place. I make my music with just one guitar. Could use some tips on switching from rhythm to lead and sounding cool. I admire other players who play without a rhythm guitar. I don't wish to copy them; however, I could you some tips/guidelines. Hope I'm putting this request in the right place. Computers really aren't a strong point for me.
