Charley got a reaction from Randy in Extra Content for Premium Members & Award SystemOH Yes... I found a very cool tool today... it's free (of course there is an upgrade), but the free part is more than enough to work with. I dig this tool...
it's called Fretastic - A Free Interactive Guitar Fretboard App the best I've ever worked with... check it out...

Charley got a reaction from Randy in Extra Content for Premium Members & Award SystemLoL... yep, That's why they call me OG... I'm seem to be the Old Guy in what ever circle.
I know right... Started playing guitar 57 years ago. I've played at many levels. Bands, Session and so on. But dig. Life happens Sevier Motor Cycle Accident and boom all that was gone. Funny though, I could play but I didn't understand. After a number of years it started coming back. When I was Younger I was all bout Jazz and Blues In College. Love the Blues, and Jazz is, well, it's just plain fun. I love Theory, I it's the heart beat of everything. Yes, I must admit at many points it very boring. But, it all ties together and revelations begin and Boom... MUSIC! Music is my life. Really the only thing that has been with me all my life. And when I found HP many years ago. It pulled me out of a rut, a rut that I thought I'd never get out of. I look at my Instruments completely different... Yes Theory is very important... But HP Plays... Oh man... Love the style. Will I ever be able to do that... Well HP Says If I practice... Sure toss in some OG style and boom... It's all about the groove...
Nice to meet you Michael, I'm back and it's time to have some fun!

Charley got a reaction from Randy in Extra Content for Premium Members & Award SystemMaybe some Theory? I know I know, dirty word. but I love it. As the great Les Paul said, The more you learn about Guitar/Music. The more you realize you know nothing... The things one can do with guitar are limitless.
Peace...

Charley got a reaction from Randy in Extra Content for Premium Members & Award SystemGreetings,
My name is Charley... If I may interject... I had one of those clip on for the phone deals... if you get one. do not buy the cheap ones. I got one for 12 bucks... didn't work very well, kept slipping. then I got a more expensive one, (I think it was 30 bucks. Worked really well, if you shoot under florescent lights the strings look trippy... any way... not that heave, I actually didn't even notice it...
Rock On!
PS, the sound is not that great. I usually record audio and do the editing in Resolve...

Charley got a reaction from Randy in Guitar Training and Theory AppsSo good to be home. GuitarPro is perfect. I use GP and a few other tools to help me "get it" After a few Sevier head injuries due to accidents, I have to work a little bit harder than the normal person. (I know I'm not normal... hense why I like it here, "I may not look Crazy, but I am" LoL... anyway. I use primarily GP7.5 but I also use Neck Diagrams and fretastic. Between these three I get it. Example. I stuck on the positions for minor pentatonic. Seeing them in different formats helped me put the puzzle together. The end of one position in a mode is the beginning of another position. then My big revelation was when I discovered that if you add the 2nd and the 6th to the Pentatonic... Booom... DORIAN! So now I'm looking at all the relations to the 7 church modes to the Pentatonic. there are many many other modes as well... Seems to make it easier for me.
Understanding scale modes can be the most valuable tool for finding, Key, Chords, etc... It's all there in the scale. Boring, Yes, Frustrating at times... Absolutely... However the rewards are limitless and If I can figure this out... Anyone can. You should check out fretastic. I really only use it for quick reference. It's very good for that.
Back to Practice...
Thanks HP! Make it Awesome!

Charley got a reaction from Randy in Guitar Training and Theory AppsGreetings Y'all!
My name is Charley, I go by OG, I've been on and off with HP for many years. Life happens but I'm back and I used to be very active and, heh, nothing has changed... I get very excited about guitar music. The very cool thing about music is one can never ever stop learning. The great Les Paul said. The more you learn about Guitar, the more you realize you know nothing... LoL.. love that man...
I was thinking. I've searched and used many apps to teach myself more about Theory and other such Musical Oriented activity.
Do y'all use any to work thru Modes and Positions, Progressions and other such musical stuffs
I actively use 3 at the moment. GutiarPro 7.5, Neck Diagrams2 and just found another very cool tool app... Fretastic... It's very cool indeed...
Y'all be cool... Cya Round... 😎

Charley got a reaction from Randy in Practice PlanI do like to coach, it's different than what you do for sure. Maybe as the next few years go maybe I can. I have a few kind of students here in the community I live in. I give them charts for chords and play with them. It's more of a coaching. I do like my charts... LoL...
I will try this. All about science... I'll keep ya posted for sure...

Charley got a reaction from Randy in Practice PlanIt's what works for me. I have friends that only use computer apps for study, charts, tabs and what not. I just take it in better when I put my hands on it. I retain it better.
My focused Practice time is one hour a day. My focus is Theory, (Right now, maybe next month it will be Creativity), but in that hour I have 6, 10 minute blocks. blocks 1, 3 and 5 are Theory. blocks 2, 4 and are Technique, block 6 is always Creativity. I know kinda very structured but I seem to retain it better. After Focused Practice is hours and hours of random playing with some more unstructured Theory. at a minimum I have a guitar in my lap of 4 hours a day. Maximum of 12 a few days a week. Switching from Acoustic to Electric. I'm Retired now and I figured.. Why not be my own Rock Star, or play at the local Coffee Shops. Maybe teach? Nah, Tried that after college, I do not have the patience for that. I admire music teachers, nerves of steel.
But One must take time for rest. Listen to music, or the wind. Take time for just yourself, family, all that. It's healthy...

Charley got a reaction from Randy in Practice PlanGreeting's Y'all,
Over the years I've become more and more passionate about Guitar, actually music in general. I used to pick up my guitar and just play, maybe look at some charts and practice for a few minutes then go off on the few things I learned and thought I'd just move on. This was, In My Case, A mistake. There are those that music comes so naturally to they can almost just pick up any instrument and play it like they've been playing all their lives. I am not one of those. I have to work at it pretty hard. With my passion for music this is not a burden, it's an adventure, that is the beauty of it for me as I really feel accomplishment over simple things.
Now I've come up with my plan. In the end it actually makes it easier for me to practice and more and more things just seem to stick. So when HP says, don't skip this step... I don't. I work that part harder than the rest and, Yeah, he is right.
I used to only play music that I wrote. I think Until 10/11 years ago, I only knew 2 covers. House of the rising sun (I learned that when I was 6) and Heart of Gold. Everything else I played I had written. Well that's great but then I found myself in this impossible rut... My point is we can all learn from all music. If you like it. Learn how to play it. Then Ask yourself, What did I learn?
My Practice plan includes Three Tiers... Theory, Technique and Creativity. I'm pretty sure I heard HP say something about that like a decade ago. The key to a good practice session is to 1. have a dedicated place for focused practice. 2. Have all the tools you need to practice, i.e. Pencil, Paper, Metronome, whatever it is you need to achieve that session to it's fullest, in that place. 3. how much time are you willing/able to practice. and how many days a week. It's been my experience that taking a day or two off a week is very healthy. My days off are still musically oriented as I own a Internet Radio Station. so I'm always in there one way or the other to create mood or just what I'm feeling for that day.
What's your Practice Plan? Can we share and maybe we can all benefit from each other. The purpose of a good practice plan that works for you, is to remove the stumbling blocks we create for ourselves... In My Humble Opinion, this Academy is a great place to help with that.

Charley got a reaction from Randy in Tone, Tone OMG TONE!Tone... The Bane of My Existence 😄
So here's the thing. I've watched and listened and looked for "The Tone" I've found it varies from time to time. Where I get frustrated is finding someone else's tone. The gear? the Player? So the "Blue Jean Blues" lesson. (dig that by the way) I was trying to find the tone. Now I know HP has a very nice set up. But there has to be a chain of effects to get that sweet tone.
Does anyone else have this issue? Please help me... hahahahaha... I have some good gear. Tons of plug ins. I use StudioOne 5. what ever the new one is. I have "Everything" that comes with it as far as plug ins. For amps I have a Princeton 150 watt (way to much power for me) 2x12 Combo. I can't even turn that on in my little apt. When I do play thru an amp it's thru my lil Marshall Code25. Tons of presets but hey... I wanna know where the sound that comes from the song I just heard so I can try to play it. I have a gazillion pedals (in storage) screamers and fuzz, whaa, Morley's Boss, Dan Electro I can find awesome tones, BUT, not the one I just heard. so I wind up groovin on something else all together 😎
Anyway, tone, effects... it all comes to a big mishmosh at a certain point. I might be over thinking it (as I do) but any tips I might pick from anyone...
Thanks...

Charley got a reaction from Randy in Playing Level AwardsGreetings HP! Well, I have been absent for some time. Some 6 months ago my hands went numb. It's taken 6 months to be scheduled for surgery. Dr Kim is the Best Hand surgeon in the state and tells me I will make a full recovery. I have Sevier Carpel Tunnel in both Wrists. Dr Kim says it's common in long time Guitar Players who do not pay attention to the way they are holding they hands when playing.
So I have gone back to the beginning and studying Music and Guitar Theory. Hands off. this has been good for me as far as that goes. After my surgery in the next month I will have to start from scratch (will kinda I guess I did play for 60 years) with my hands in position as to not re create this problem and stay healthy into my 90's like Les Paul and BB King. We can play into old age... It is so important to do it right.
I would love to receive a certificate and work hard again to be a good player. Being with you for over 12 years has helped me immensely though I am usually in the background. I would really like to be more involved, everyday, and commit to being the best player I can be... and I know I can... It's what I have lived for all my life...
Thanks HP... Talk soon!
