Phrasing is an important element in smooth jazz guitar. I would even say it's the most important part of it. So let's have a look how you can achieve an easy way of phrasing with 3 tricks I am showing you. In this example I am working with a I VI II V progression in D major. That means that you can use either the D major pentatonic or the D major scale. Smooth Minor Jazz Guitar - Advanced Lesson When it comes to smooth jazz in minor keys we are often pretty close to the concept of a minor blues. In this tutorial I talk about advanced improvisation concepts for a simple smooth jazz guitar progression in the key of A minor. Beside the easy way of just playing the A minor pentatonic or the A blues scale over this progression I show you concepts of advanced improvisation by using the different modes for each chord and by working with concepts of modal interchange and upper structure triad. Thats a good video to understand modes better. I come from the piano and I must say it is in fact easier to understand modes on the piano. At least for me - but you guess check out this video if you have dificulties to understand modes.... 🙂

Fantastic lesson! I like e.g. „upper structure” concept I have a question - there is the last part of the solo in Introduction part of the video - starting from 2:41. Can anyone advice me please if it is just D dorian scale played, or some alteration is present there? There is no tab for solo part in download section to check this.

Yeah I of course know John Mc Laughlin - he still is a great guitar player but his highlighted years were in fact the 70's. Good thing with age - one is never to old for guitar playing.

Enjoyed this lesson, I think I could get into jazz ... back in the seventies I was a big fan of John McLaughlin of Mahavishnu Orchestra fame. He was involved with many genres, including Indian classical, Western classical, flamenco and blues, but I remember him most for his "electric jazz fusion" on albums I still own, "Inner Mountain Flame" and "Birds of Fire". Those were very happy days in the seventies .... God I'm feeling old!!!
