Basic Jazz Guitar 2

In this tutorial I talk about basic jazz guitar and the topics " minor modes " and " secondary dominates " . To understand this tutorial it is strongly recommended that you first learn the tutorial " Basic Jazz Guitar ". I make a short review about that at the beginning of this tutorial. If you already know what I am talking about and you can follow then you are ready for this tutorial - if not please first go through this tutorial :

And in this tutorial I show you the connection of minor and major modes. If you know the major modes it's simple you just make the VI in major to the I in minor and this leads you to the following steps :

I : m-7 Chords Aeolian ( 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 )
II : m7b5 Chords Locrian ( 1 b2 b3 4 b5 b6 b7 )
bIII : Maj7 Chord Ionian ( 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 )
IV : m-7 Chord Dorian ( 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7 )
V : m-7 Chord Phrygian ( 1 b2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 ) / or Dominat 7 Chord Phrygian nat. 3 ( 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 b7 )
bVI : Maj7 Chord Lydian ( 1 2 3 #4 5 6 7 )
bVII : Dominat 7 Chord Mixolydian ( 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7 )

After that I talk about secondary dominat chords. They mostly resolve a 4th above or a 5th below.

On page 2, of the music sheets for this tutorial, the scale for G7 shows the 5th string frets 10, 11 then 14.  A full step and a half between frets 11 and 14 which sounds odd to my ears…..Have played this scale several times as I work through the sheets and I can’t seem to get comfortable with this particular scale interval.

Hey Greg, well thats phrygian nat. 3 - sounds quiet oriental. Thats the default mode which is used on the dominant in a minor chord progression. You can play phrygian there. Maybe you like that one more. Later in an improvisation you can also play other modes like mixolydian b6 or altered.
