Basic Jazz Guitar

Here you can learn the very basics which are needed to play a basic jazz guitar. I talk about the major scale, how to build chords with the major scale, stacking up triads and how to find out all 7 chords which are attached to the steps of the major scale. To each chord there is a mode attached. Please also start to create your own chord progressions as explained in the video. To master this tutorial, probably rewatch this video over and over till you understand it all and it is also essential that you learn the schematics below by heart.

For me...I only like some aspects of jazz music. . I took an will take some bits. 

Ionian and Aeolian Mode I allready have in my ears and hands. Mixo- and Dorian Mode with Fullscales I will look deeper now.

WIll make an exercise to get the scale in the hand while play it to the chord.

As I said previously, my playing for the past 50 years has been country music, picking and chording mostly on the first three frets.  After over 20 years of not picking up the guitar I started again and found to my delight  “hpcrazy” on utube.  For the past “Covid” year I have been working on scales throughout the neck using the “caged” system as it relates to the associated chords in particular the minor, pentatonic and minor blues scales and to quickly identify the notes wherever they are.  Along with that I have been working on your slow jazz versions for Autumn Leaves and Summertime and I am, I think, progressing reasonably well on these.  I still noodle on the first three chords with country music on occasion.  This new challenge you have provided is focused towards the groundwork to properly play jazz music which is what I would like to learn. I am 74 years old now and would like to be able to noodle around and comfortably understand and reasonably play some resemblance to jazz music before I reach 80 and yes I have a lot of enjoyable work to do.  I would also like to find a slow jazz version of “Fly me to the Moon” to add to my rather limited repertoire :). In any event thank you again for all your help and your dedication.

Yes I am pretty aware that it is a challenge but thats the way to learn jazz properly.

These are 6 years. With some devotion to guitar and music you can get pretty far in this time. You will enjoy it. 🙂

Great lesson, just the place I need to start. I will be working with a teach in a couple of months and this is just what I needed to kick start my practice and keep up the enthusiasm until then.  Thanks for letting me join, I have watched a few of your videos and are you not only a great player, but a great teacher too.

Hey Tod, nice having you here and yes this video here is for sure a good point to start. Since you are into jazz guitar also don't miss the theory about modes which is posted.
