The turnaround is one of the most used elements in jazz music. It appears in jazz blues, in rhythm changes or many Jazz standards in different forms. So what is a turnaround ? it is a 1625 progression which is played mostly in 2 bars. There are several forms available and babe are all called turn around so here are three examples below. Bb7 G7 / C7 F7 Bbmaj7 G7 / C7 F7 Bbmaj7 Gm7 / Cm7 F7 There are different methods to make a solo over such musical form. Some of them are easy, others are more advanced and difficult. In this tutorial I talked about the easy form and that method works over all versions of turnarounds in any situation. The main trick is to use the major pentatonic scale and adding the approach note which is located between the interval 2 and 3 and is so-called flat 3. So first I am going to show you a written guitar which works on a turn around with a walking bass and then show you the major pentatonic with the approach note and then give you some guitar licks and some inspiration how to use that scale over a turn around. At the end of the tutorial I am going to play a version of my own to give you some additional improvisation on how to work out with that method. In this tutorial you can learn how to play a smooth jazz guitar. when it comes to smooth jazz the guitar lines have to be smooth relaxed and have a great phrasing. It's the phrasing which makes the smoothness and the difference between cool and very smooth jazz guitar lines in this genre. I broke down three main phrasing tricks which you can use to enter this really great genre of smooth jazz even if you're not so experienced in jazz guitar playing. In the first part of the tutorial I get some technical advice how you can build up your speed with the pentatonic or the minor scales and then I show you three rhythm figures and phrasing tricks which you can use in any situation by using any scale you like. When comes to smooth jazz George Benson is one of the go-to guys. I've always been a huge fan of George Benson and his guitar playing even his more sweet songs like on his CD Breezin. In this tutorial I'll show you some tricks and tips how to play a song pretty much in the style of breathing by George Benson with the chords Dmaj7 / Bm7 / Em7 / A7. This is a so-called 1625 progression which is normally displayed with Roman letters. In this tutorial I first show you the chords, then explain the progression, then show the used scales and then show you a simple theme which really works nights on this progression. The theme is very simple to play and give you an idea how you can develop a theme with simple melodic lines. Then I'll show you how to make variations on a theme by using the associated scale in this case this is the D major pentatonic. Since the major pentatonic sounds a little bit sweet I show you a trick how to use an approach note on the third note of the major pentatonic scale to create a more bluesy sound. For the concept to play smooth jazz theme song is to first play the theme then start to do variations on the theme then go into improvisation with a major pentatonic and then give you the more highlighted line with the Blues Licks and at the end you come back to the theme. Discounted is very similar to normal Jazz improvisation and it smooth jazz you just going to work more in a bluesy kind of way. At the end of the tutorial I going to play for 3 minutes example how to develop your ideas on improvisation on variations on a theme and to make it interesting to the listener. I finally got past all the audio-visual hurdles and can post my debut video. I think it's a good idea to post a video as it is a little like going to an audition. Also, it documents where my playing is at now, and lets me analyze my problem areas, too.

Yes thats normal - playing chords is not so complex then improvising. You can try to do exercises where you improvise but focus on your foot. Meaning instead on focusing to play a lot of notes, try to focus to have your foot right and then play one note you really want and hear.

Hey Pete, thats really a great feedback. Thats whats music is all about - you need to hear what you want to play. Thats a sign that you kind of found a musical home. You can train this more - try to play the things you here on the fretboard. It might be difficult at the beginning but the more you do that the better you are able to play instant what you hear. The run at 1:17 it just the D major pentatonic up.

Ok...I'd had a few🍸 when I wrote that so maybe I overstated it a little bit.🙃 To be more clear...that tutorial has changed my music life! Here's how for now(I will struggle to articulate this but)...I'm an intermediate player at best, I've played Blues and Rock most of my life, and then lately, Jazz Guitar but something about Smooth Jazz is really grabbing me...where when I play along with you or to the backing track, it feels good and more importantly, I'm hearing what I want to play. So that's the first huge change and I'm super excited about this!! Also, it's never been very clear to me the relationship between major and minor pentatonics and when to play them. I find I much prefer the major scale and I'm one of those that loves the "sweet" notes, which is another discovery I found in this tutorial. Some other puzzles are also starting to unlock... more on that later if I can describe it. Question: the run you did starting at 1:17, what scale is that?

FIne ? I'm allready progressing on the tune... I am more secure and relaxed and learn to fit the chords better. Im checking the way it goes: I rest on the note, slide forward or backward and rest again. The timing is nearly everything. Im beginning to learn after long times of noodeling the guitar ? Hey Andrea, thanks for your feedback. I am glad this tutorial brought you some great motiviation and inspiration to work on scale and those 3 pretty simple rhythm ideas. The reason why the the gain fades in and out might be because it gets compressed and that pumping effect is pretty common when you overdo this effect. I see you work with 432Hz tunings too ? I was not able to download the recording - somehow it said something like this is an educational page but no download.

Hi HP ...here is some feedback: I was learnig the scales, for 4 days and jammed sometimes. Today I jammed to the track, with the smartphone beside, because I wanted to track the rythmic idea that you can hear in the beginnig. That was a key moment i had while jamming. I will study that more! I put the recording ?in the daw and pushed the gain and did fades in and out. I always play a hole step downtuned and in 432hz. SO I converted the Backingtrack also. Ok thats no brilliant recording... but it makes me happy and the somehow wellknown melodys dropped out. I will find the tune, I think it was a 70s hit ? I come to new rhythmic ideas and begin to understand the 16tel lines better. It is just the beginning and for fun. Yes some notes are off ?? Thank you for the lesson!!.
