Guitar Secrets - Minor Smooth Jazz In this guitar secrets tutorial I talk about minor smooth jazz. I am giving you a whole bundle of ideas how you can work out on a typical minor smooth jazz chord progression. In this case I made it pretty simple for you. This is the chord progression I have used : Fm7 / Fm7 / Db7 / C7alt First I show you the chords I have used and then I give some really deep insight how to play a great lead guitar over this progression. So the first step is to analyze what kind of modes can be played over each of the chords. For beginners in the smooth jazz topic it's the F minor blues scale which can be used over the entire track. To follow the chords you can use a simple trick by just playing the bluenote ( B ) on the Db7 chords and the E on the C7alt chord. These are guide tones so you match pretty well to those chords. For more sophisticated soling I do an analysis for you and give you a 2nd possibility for each chord. This is called modal interchange. That means you can select the mode which you like more or you can mix up the different modes the way you want to make your soloing sound more interesting. I give you some short tips on the secondary modes on how to make your mode sound more interesting by using upper structure triads. That's a great way of working out the sound of any selected mode. At the end I give some instructions how to work out the modes with a distorted lead sound. Here are the modes to each chord : Fm7 Fm Blues Scale F Aeolian F Dorian Db7 Fm Blues Scale Db Lydian b7 C7alt Fm Blues Scale Fm harmonic minor C Phrygian Nat. 3 C altered Scale At the end I play a full sequence for you to give you some inspiration. I have worked out a version of the theme for you which works great on the guitar and in the 2nd part I give you detailed tips and tricks on how to manage the improvisation. Billie's Bounce - Guitar Lesson Here you can learn everything about Billie's Bounce . This is a jazz blues which was composed by Charlie Parker in 1945 and it is a pretty complex Melody with a lot of jumps of 4ths and 5ths. What also makes this melody special is that it seems to be in a 3/4 measure by setting the accents in that way but it is in a measure of 4/4. We don't really know if this song is dedicated to Billie Holiday or his agent Billie Shaw or even his secretary Billy Miller. Introduction 0:30 The tutorial starts by an example with some improvisation and some scatting lines. That thing is a technique where you sing and play unisono at the same time. Chords 2:41 In the next part I talk about the blues form which is a normal 12 Bar Blues form in F with the following chords : F7 / F7 / F7 / F7 Bb7 / Bb7 / F7 / D7 Gm7 / C7 / F7 D7 / Gm7 C7 I give some instructions how to make syncopes by placing the chords on 1 and 2 + or 1 and 4+ and how to make your rhythm guitar really cool and grooving. Theme 7:56 In the next part I show my version how to play the theme of Billie's Bounce. Normally you play a theme one octave higher than its written but in this case it makes sense to play it in the original pitch because the phrasing requires open strings and this way it's the easiest way to proceed and it's and the best in this tune. Improvisation Tips 16:24 In the final part I give some insight in a easy improvisation concept by using the F blues scale or a mixed scale will replace the interval of flat 7 through a 6. Then I show some combinations of playing blues scale chords or Wes Montgomery style octave. Scatting 23:22 Here I show you how you can practice the scatting technique. There you play and sing your phrases simulatonious. This is a great technique which is used in Jazz often with players such as George Benson or others. Yes as a beginner you probably have some trouble with the 16ths but just keep it going and work on it. They will come ? In Smooth Jazz you need to have some 16ths but you dont need to be extremly fast or play long runs just to have a certain speed which you can play smoothly and relaxed.

Hi HP, Awesome lesson I am still a beginner and these licks are very accessible. As expected, the 16ths are still killing me but I'll get there. Where can I find the backing track you are using? The ones I found are either faster or a lot smoother and I can't keep up on the 16ths. Cheers, Antonio

Hey Matt, yeah the16ths are a bit a task. Just take your time after a while they start to flow smoother. Yeah these 2 topics are connected so it made sense for me to put them together here.

HP I really dig the licks. It will take me a while to get the 16ths down. I love Cool and Smooth jazz. I just joined but I think I will like the blend of music and spiritually.
